What to do when you need a tow...

No one expects to need a tow or roadside assistance, but the reality is — you are more likely than not to need a tow truck, jump start, lock out assistance or tire change at some time in your driving life. In 2012, leading roadside service provider AAA towed nearly 12 million vehicles to a repair shop. Here are some tips on how to prepare:

Move your vehicle to a safe spot -

The first is to get to a safe location. If your car is experiencing problems but can still be driven, drive the car to a safe location. Most importantly, off the roadway and out of traffic.

"If the car cannot get completely off the roadway, switch on the emergency flashers and consider leaving the vehicle and moving to a safer location," says Nielsen. The important thing is to exit the vehicle (on the side away from traffic) and to never stand directly behind or in front of a stranded vehicle.

Get assistance -

Once you’re out of harm’s way, dial a trusted local towing company, such as
 Jalyan Towing & Recovery.

Provide clear directions -

Make it easy for the driver to find you by providing your exact location and a description of your vehicle including color, make and model. Provide your membership number or insurance information if applicable. Be sure to provide the dispatcher with a phone number where you can be reached and describe your problem in detail so the dispatcher can determine the best course of action. For example, if you need a jump start they may not need to send a more costly heavy-duty tow truck. Wait with your vehicle for the driver to arrive.

Decide where to tow your vehicle -

You will need to provide the name and address of the location where you’d like your vehicle towed. This will most likely be your dealership or an automotive repair shop. If your vehicle requires repair and you are unsure of where to take it, a good tow company will be able to provide suggestions for where to take your vehicle near your location or near your destination. Your insurance provider may have a list of approved facilities as well.
